Mr Lum + family of 8  ·  10 – 18 September 2026  ·  9 days / 8 nights
In/out: Shenzhen SZX 8 travellers Elderly mum Guangzhou base, 5 nights Macao 1 night ¥1 ≈ RM0.60
What changed in this version. You were right — the old plan moved hotels three times. This one goes straight to Guangzhou from the airport on Day 1 and stays five nights in one hotel, so the family unpacks once and doesn't repack for five days. Hotel moves drop from three to two. Day 1 is a rest day that starts in the evening. There's now a split shopping / sightseeing day in Foshan, and every single day has a wet-weather backup printed underneath it, plus a typhoon plan at the bottom.

The shape of the trip

One continuous loop. Land at Shenzhen, go straight north to Guangzhou, live there for five nights with day trips, cut west to Macao for one night, then ferry back to Shenzhen with two clear days before the flight.

Day 1: getting from SZX to Guangzhou

This is the one transfer that matters most — everyone is exhausted after a midnight flight and there are eight sets of luggage. Both options below work. One is worth the money.

Option A — pre-booked car, door to door Take this one

Two 7-seater MPVs meet you at arrivals with a name card and drive you to the Guangzhou hotel. No metro, no stairs, no ticket machines, no dragging suitcases through a station while jet-lagged.

Drive time1.5 – 2 hours
Cost (2 vehicles)¥1,400 – 1,800
≈ RM840 – 1,080
Per person≈ RM105 – 135

Option B — Sui-Shen intercity rail Budget alternative

There is a direct train from Shenzhen Airport station to Guangzhou East — 深圳机场站 → 广州东站 on the 穗深城际. No changes.

Fast trains~48 min
Frequency~50 trains/day, roughly every 37 min
Fare≈ ¥81 / person
≈ RM48 · 2019 published fare, treat as approximate
BoardingBus-style — no reserved seats. Buy on the day, take any train. No need to book eight seats together.
Then广州东站 → Metro Line 1 direct to the old city, or two taxis (~20 min)

The line transferred to 广东城际 operation in January 2026 and ran end-to-end from 31 July 2026. Look for 城际 / 穗深 signage at the airport's ground transport centre.

The honest trade-off. Rail saves roughly RM400 for the group of eight — about RM50 each. On arrival day, after a midnight flight with an elderly passenger, paying RM50 each to avoid a station with eight suitcases is the better deal. Take the car on Day 1 and use rail for the mid-trip legs where everyone is rested.

Shenzhen ⇄ Macao ferry — route choice

RouteSailingsVerdict
Taipa ⇄ Shekou Use this 14/day
08:30–21:00
Most frequent by far, 60–70 min, ¥232. The only one flexible enough to absorb a delay.
Outer Harbour ⇄ Shekou 4/day Cheaper (HK$200, or HK$170 off-peak) and closer to the peninsula, but only four sailings.
Macao ⇄ SZX Airport pier 4/day Lands at the terminal, which is tempting — but four sailings is too thin to build a 22:00 international departure around. Don't.
Crossing into Macao: Hengqin, never Gongbei. 横琴 Hengqin is open 24 hours, uses joint inspection (queue once, clear both China and Macao in a single pass), is step-free throughout with full escalator coverage, has manual counters for foreign passports and assistance lanes for travellers over 60. 拱北 Gongbei is the busiest land border in the country with long walks, incomplete escalator coverage and heavy queues — guides explicitly tell travellers with elderly companions to avoid it. 青茂 Qingmao is e-gates only and does not accept passports.

Day by day

Every day has a blue strip at the bottom: what to do instead if it rains.

DAY 1Thu 10 Sep SZX → Guangzhou. Rest. Start in the evening.
early AM
Land SZX. Immigration + baggage ~60–90 min for 8 people. Your pre-booked cars are waiting. 深圳宝安国际机场
Drive straight to Guangzhou. 1.5–2 h. Nobody has to think. This is the whole point of going first — you sleep in the bed you'll sleep in for the next five nights.
AM
Check in, sleep. Base in Yuexiu or Liwan (越秀/荔湾) on Metro Line 1 — that puts the old city, the food and the Line 1/广佛线 interchange within walking distance. Ask for low-floor rooms near the lift.
afternoon
Nothing. Genuinely nothing. A midnight flight with an elderly traveller means Day 1 is a rest day. Do not let anyone schedule a museum.
17:00
Shamian Island 沙面岛 free best for mum — car-free river island of 19th-century consular buildings under mature banyans. Completely flat, fully shaded, benches throughout. Metro Line 1, 黄沙站. The gentlest possible way to start the trip.
19:00
Dinner: Panxi 泮溪酒家 — historic Lingnan garden restaurant on Lychee Bay. Book for 8. After dinner, walk the lit canals of 荔枝湾涌 free — flat, and ten minutes from the restaurant.
If it rains: the transfer is by car, so it doesn't matter. Skip the island and go straight to dinner — Shamian keeps for another evening. Eat long, sleep early.
DAY 2Fri 11 Sep Morning tea, Chen Clan Academy, Pearl River
08:00
Morning tea — the reason you came to Guangzhou. 陶陶居 (第十甫路 20号, since 1880), 广州酒家 (文昌南路 2号), or 点都德 (chain, no booking needed). Order har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, cheung fun, lo mai gai. ¥60–100 / head
10:30
Chen Clan Academy 陈家祠 ¥10free 65+ — the high-water mark of Cantonese decorative art: the "three carvings, two sculptures, one casting, one mural". Shaded courtyards, step-free side entrance.
Cheap, fast, and a big group can split and recombine. ¥30–50 / head
15:00
Rest. Back through the hot part of the day.
19:30
Pearl River night cruise 珠江夜游 from ¥98best for mum — 60–90 min, seated, air-conditioned lower deck, zero steps. Depart 天字码头 (Metro Line 2, 海珠广场). Book the indoor lower deck; the open top deck is hot and loud.
If it rains: the academy's halls sit under deep eaves — fine in light rain, miserable in heavy. Heavy rain → swap to 广东省博物馆. Cruises are cancelled in storms — replace with 北京路 + 大佛古寺, which are arcaded and lit after dark.
DAY 3Sat 12 Sep Park, museum, riverside skyline
09:00
Yuexiu Park 越秀公园 free — the city's largest green space, shady, benches throughout. Five Rams statue 五羊石像, and Zhenhai Tower 镇海楼 ¥10free 65+ if mum's knees are up to five floors — one floor is plenty. Metro Line 2, 越秀公园站.
12:30
Lunch炳胜 or 惠食佳 (the latter does 啫啫煲 clay pots, brought to the table still crackling). Book for 8.
14:30
Guangdong Museum 广东省博物馆 freeA/C · wheelchairsbook ahead on the official WeChat account. Open 09:00–21:00, loans wheelchairs, fully air-conditioned. Metro Lines 3/5, 珠江新城站.
18:30
Huacheng Square / Haixinsha 花城广场 · 海心沙 free — flat riverside plaza with the Canton Tower framed across the water. The best free view of the tower, with no queue and no ¥150 ticket.
If it rains: swap Yuexiu Park → 南越王博物院 (indoor, underground tomb). Swap Huacheng Square → 正佳广场, a vast indoor mall next door with an aquarium and a rainforest atrium under one roof. The museum half of the day is already under cover.
DAY 4Sun 13 Sep Split day — Foshan
09:30
Everyone travels together to Foshan. Metro: Line 1 to 西朗, change to the 广佛线, ride to 祖庙站 — 30–40 min, no taxi needed. Or two Didi for door-to-door (~¥200–250, ~40 min). Foshan is 17 km from Guangzhou; this is a metro ride, not an expedition.
why here
The two groups stay five minutes apart. The temple and the shopping quarter share one metro station, so nobody gets stranded across a city and everyone can reunite for lunch in minutes. That is much safer than splitting up across Guangzhou.
Group A — Sightseeing

祖庙博物馆 佛山市祖庙博物馆 ¥20¥10 concession
Open 08:30–18:00 (last entry 17:30). The finest Lingnan temple complex — and scheduled lion dance and Cantonese opera performances, which are seated, under cover, and the single best thing on this trip for an elderly passenger. Wheelchairs available.

Wong Fei-hung & Ip Man
The 黄飞鸿纪念馆 and 叶问堂 are both inside the same complex — no extra ticket, no extra walking.

梁园 佛山梁园 ¥10
One of the four great Lingnan gardens. 09:00–17:00 (last entry 16:40). Small, shaded, flat — about an hour. Free on Saturdays with ID, if you'd rather move this day to Sat 12.

Group B — Shopping

岭南新天地 佛山岭南新天地 free to enter
Open all day, shops generally 10:00–22:00. A restored Lingnan quarter of lane houses turned into boutiques, cafés, craft shops and restaurants. Directly adjacent to the temple — the two groups are a five-minute walk apart the entire day.

What's worth buying here
Foshan is the home of Cantonese ceramics, paper-cutting and lion-dance crafts. There are hands-on workshops (paper-cutting from ¥80, lion-head painting from ¥98) if anyone wants to do something rather than buy something.

Optional for either group
南风古灶 — a 500-year-old working pottery kiln, ¥25 (¥12.50 concession), 08:30–17:30, reached via 佛山地铁2号线 石湾站.

13:00
Reunite for lunch in 岭南新天地 — dozens of restaurants in one pedestrian quarter, so the group can pick a place together without anyone navigating anywhere.
18:00
Back to Guangzhou — same metro, 30–40 min. Dinner near the hotel.
If it rains: this day survives rain better than most. The temple's halls and the opera stage are covered, and 岭南新天地 is largely indoor. Drop 梁园 — it's an open garden and it's the one part that doesn't work wet. Torrential rain or a storm warning → stay in Guangzhou and do 正佳广场 + 广东省博物馆 instead. Foshan is 30 minutes away; it will keep for another trip.
DAY 5Mon 14 Sep Old city — tomb, opera museum, Beijing Road
09:30
Nanyue King Tomb Museum 南越王博物院 · 王墓展区 ¥10free 65+ indoor — the 2,000-year-old tomb of the Nanyue king, with the famous silk-and-jade burial suit. Almost entirely indoors, which makes it the most reliable sight in the city on a bad day. Metro Line 2, 越秀公园站. (The 王宫展区 branch is free but needs advance booking.)
12:30
Lunch in Xiguan — back to 荔湾 for Cantonese home cooking, or 向群饭店.
14:30
Yongqing Fang & the Cantonese Opera Museum 永庆坊 · 粤剧艺术博物馆 free — restored Xiguan lanes around a beautiful opera museum with an indoor performance hall. Flat, compact, mostly covered. Metro Line 1, 黄沙站.
17:30
Rest before the last evening.
19:30
Beijing Road & Dafo Temple 北京路 · 大佛古寺 free — pedestrian shopping street, and the temple is dramatically lit after dark. Metro Lines 1/2, 公园前站.
If it rains: this is already largely an indoor day — the tomb museum and the opera museum are both under cover, and 永庆坊 has continuous arcades. Beijing Road is partly arcaded, and 天河城 / 太古汇 malls are a short taxi away. Move lunch earlier and let museums absorb the afternoon.
DAY 6Tue 15 Sep Slow morning, then Guangzhou → Zhuhai → Macao
09:00
Slow breakfast and packing. No sightseeing — this is a travel day and the morning is deliberately empty. Check out of the base you've had for five nights.
11:30
Rail 广州南 → 珠海 ~1 h, ¥70 (RM42). 124+ trains a day — take any that suits. Arrive 珠海站 (Gongbei).
13:00
Taxi / van 25–30 min to Hengqin Port 横琴口岸. Do not cross at Gongbei even though the train drops you there. Thirty extra minutes in the car buys a crossing that is dramatically easier for an elderly traveller.
14:00
Cross into Macao. Single joint-inspection queue, step-free throughout, manual counters for foreign passports, assistance lanes for 60+. Passports and onward ferry booking ready for all eight.
15:00
You arrive in Cotai. Free hotel shuttles 发财车 run to the Venetian, Galaxy, Londoner and Parisian in 5–10 min, no charge, whether or not you're a guest.
17:00
Taipa Village & Rua do Cunha 官也街 free — short pedestrian food street, with the pastel Taipa Houses 龙环葡韵 a few minutes' walk away.
19:30
Dinner: Portuguese / Macanese. The one meal on this itinerary you cannot get anywhere else. 非洲鸡, 马介休 bacalau, 葡国鸡, and a water-crab congee 水蟹粥. Taipa: 小飞象 or 海湾餐厅.
21:00
Senado Square 议事亭前地 free — the wave-patterned mosaic pavement, lit and nearly empty by 21:00.
If it rains: both the train and the Hengqin crossing are under cover — this day works fine in the wet. Just allow an extra 30 minutes and take the free resort shuttles instead of walking. Pack one small overnight bag each for Macao so the big cases can stay shut in the corner for a single night.
DAY 7Wed 16 Sep Macao — historic core, then ferry to Shenzhen
08:30
Ruins of St Paul's 大三巴牌坊 freego at 08:30 or it becomes a wall of tour groups. The Fortress 大炮台 is next to it and has an escalator up the hillside; the Macao Museum sits at the top MOP 15.
10:30
Walk down through the old core — 议事亭前地, 仁慈堂, 玫瑰堂. All within a few hundred metres, all free, mostly flat.
12:00
Lunch and the egg-tart question. 玛嘉烈蛋挞 (peninsula) and 安德鲁蛋挞 (Coloane) are the same recipe from a split marriage — you only need one, and Margaret's is the one in walking range. Add a pork chop bun 大利来记 and congee noodles at 黄枝记.
14:00
A-Ma Temple 妈阁庙 free — Macao's oldest temple, terraced into the hillside. The name "Macau" comes from here. Some steps, so treat it as optional for mum; there's a shaded plaza at the base.
16:30
Ferry to Shenzhen氹仔 Taipa → 蛇口 Shekou, 60–70 min, ¥232 (RM139), with sailings at 16:30 and 17:30 among others. Real-name boarding: eight passports, and be there 30 minutes before departure.
18:30
Land Shekou → Shenzhen hotel (20–40 min). Dinner near the hotel.
If it rains: Macao has the best wet-weather answer in the whole delta — the Cotai resorts are fully indoors and linked by free shuttles. The Venetian, Galaxy, Londoner and Parisian each contain restaurants, shops, cinemas and attractions under one roof; you can cross between them without seeing the sky. Other indoor options: the Macau Tower observation deck, the Grand Prix Museum and the Macao Museum of Art.
DAY 8Thu 17 Sep Shenzhen — buffer day
why
This day exists so that a delay costs you nothing. Two nights in Shenzhen before a 22:00 international flight means a cancelled ferry, a storm, or a tired grandmother doesn't threaten the flight. It is also the shock absorber for the whole typhoon plan below.
11:00
Mixiang Tiandi 万象天地, Coast City 海岸城 or MixC 万象城 — air-conditioned, full of restaurants, and the right answer if it's 33 °C or pouring. Huaqiangbei 华强北 for electronics, Dongmen 东门 for street-level shopping.
17:30
Shenzhen Bay Park 深圳湾公园 free — long flat coastal promenade. Sunset here is the best free thing in the city, step-free the whole way — but only if it's dry.
19:30
Farewell dinner. Seafood 潮泰海鲜 or Chaoshan beef hotpot 八合里海记 — something the group can sit around for two hours.
If it rains: the malls. This day is already built indoors, so rain changes almost nothing — just drop the Bay Park walk.
DAY 9Fri 18 Sep Shenzhen · depart 22:00
09:00
Slow breakfast, late dim sum. Nothing that requires being anywhere.
11:00
Light options: Lianhuashan Park 莲花山公园 for the Futian skyline, Nantou Ancient City 南头古城 for gifts, or a mall. Any is correct; so is doing nothing.
15:00
Pack and settle the bill. Confirm the 19:00 airport transfer is booked — two 7-seaters.
19:00
Leave for SZX. Three hours before an international departure. Nanshan/Shekou to SZX is 30–40 min, so this is generous. Keep it that way.
22:00
Departure.
If it rains: malls near the hotel, or stay in. Nothing on this day requires going outside — unless a typhoon is affecting the flight itself, in which case see the plan below.

Typhoon & storm plan

Read this bit. September is inside typhoon season. Macao's tourism authority puts the season at May to November. Your odds of a direct hit in any given week are low, but the odds of some disruption are real — and when it comes, it stops everything at once, not just the boats. During Typhoon Noul in July 2026, Zhuhai's ferries were suspended, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge closed, and passenger rail across the whole of Guangdong was progressively suspended. Airports in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai all saw cancellations.

What actually shuts — Macao, Signal 8 or above

Per the Macao Government Tourism Office, when Signal No. 8 or higher is hoisted:

Note the knock-on: if you were splitting the group between the peninsula and Cotai when the signal goes up, the bridges close and you are stuck on one side. Stay together on a signal day.

Decision tree

  1. About five days out. Start watching. If a serious system is tracking towards the Pearl River estuary, the exposed part of your itinerary is the Guangzhou → Macao → Shenzhen leg. Consider dropping Macao and spending the two extra nights in Guangzhou. Losing Macao is annoying; being stranded is worse.
  2. Signal 1–3, or just heavy rain. Everything runs. Carry on and use the per-day wet backups above. Expect delays, not cancellations.
  3. Signal 8 hoisted. Stop moving. Do not attempt an intercity transfer, a ferry or a border crossing. Shelter in the hotel. Macao's big resorts are self-contained — food, shops, medical, entertainment all indoors — which makes them genuinely the safest place in the delta to ride out a storm.
  4. After it passes. Land routes come back before sea routes. The Hengqin crossing and the railways resume first; ferries are usually last. If you need to move and the ferries are still down, go overland.
  5. Emergency route to the airport if the ferry is dead: Macao → Hengqin (land) → Zhuhai → HSR 珠海 to 广州南 → 广州南 to 深圳北 → SZX. Slow, but it uses only land links.
  6. If the flight itself is cancelled. There is nothing to do but rebook. This is what travel insurance is for — make sure the policy covers weather disruption, not just delays.
Your slack, counted honestly. Day 8 is free and Day 9's flight is at 22:00, so you have roughly 36–48 hours of buffer after the Macao night. If the Day 7 ferry is cancelled you travel on Day 8 instead and lose the Shenzhen shopping day — not the flight. That is exactly why the trip keeps two nights in Shenzhen rather than one.

Food — the short list

Guangzhou

The capital of Cantonese cooking. Morning tea is a sit-down meal, not breakfast.

陶陶居 dim sum广州酒家点都德 泮溪酒家 garden炳胜惠食佳 啫啫煲 向群饭店银记肠粉陈添记鱼皮 南信双皮奶伍湛记及第粥

Shenzhen

Migrant city — you can eat all of China here. Chaoshan and coconut chicken are the local signatures.

润园四季椰子鸡八合里海记牛肉火锅 潮泰海鲜凤凰楼胜记 南头古城 cafés

Macao

The only stop with Portuguese-Macanese food. Eat it here or not at all.

水蟹粥 crab congee非洲鸡 African chicken 马介休 bacalau葡国鸡猪扒包 玛嘉烈蛋挞安德鲁蛋挞钜记杏仁饼

Foshan (split day)

Often overlooked, but it's the home of Cantonese ceramics and a serious food town in its own right.

岭南新天地 restaurants佛山盲公饼 柱侯鸡佛山扎蹄

Feeding 8 people

Book dinner, walk in for lunch. A table for 8 needs a reservation at any sit-down restaurant — use Meituan, Dianping, or have the hotel concierge phone. For lunch, grazing streets (宝华路, 官也街, 岭南新天地) beat restaurants, because the group can split up and each person eats what they actually want.

Practical

Weather — plan for this

Mid-September in the Pearl River Delta: 28–33 °C, high humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and typhoon season. That dictates the rhythm — outdoors before 11:00 and after 17:00, indoors in between. Every day above already has an air-conditioned fallback built into it.

Umbrella each. Electrolyte sachets for mum. Ferries stop before trains; trains stop before nothing — in a severe storm it all stops, which is why Day 8 exists.

Senior discounts — worth real money

Guangdong moved to a unified provincial senior-benefit policy from 1 May 2026: at public attractions, 60–64 pays half, 65+ enters free, on an ID card, not restricted to local residents. For this itinerary that means Chen Clan Academy, the Nanyue King Tomb Museum, Zhenhai Tower, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and Baiyun Mountain are likely free for mum.

Three honest caveats. (1) It covers the main gate ticket only — cable cars, boats and special exhibitions still cost. (2) Some sites need one-time activation at the gate with the physical ID; photocopies and phone photos are generally refused. (3) Private operators — Canton Tower, Chimelong — set their own rules. Treat this as a bonus, not a guarantee.

Money & connectivity

Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay before you fly. Both accept foreign Visa/Mastercard, but the verification step is far easier on home Wi-Fi than in an arrival hall. Cash is now the exception — carry ¥500–1,000 as backup. Macao uses MOP; it's a short stop, so just pay by card. Create a WeChat group for the 8 of you before departure — on the split day it's how the two groups will find each other.

Timing

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 25 September 2026, a week after you fly home — you clear out just before it. The flip side: Sat 12 and Sun 13 September are a weekend in the old city, so start those days early and have dinner booked.

Booking checklist

Fares, schedules and entry rules verified 28–29 Aug 2026 against: TurboJET official ferry schedule and fare table (effective 11 Apr 2026); Ctrip and Tongcheng rail timetables; the China Visa Application Service Center mutual visa-exemption list; Zhuhai port authority guidance for the Gongbei, Hengqin and Qingmao crossings; Ctrip and Tongcheng attraction listings; published timetables for the 穗深城际 (Sui-Shen intercity) after its January 2026 transfer to 广东城际; the Southern Daily / Nanfang+ Foshan day-trip guide for 祖庙, 岭南新天地, 梁园 and 南风古灶; the Macao Government Tourism Office typhoon guidance and the Macao SAR Government's civil defence bulletins; and TravelDailyNews Asia's reporting on Typhoon Noul (July 2026). Rail fares are stable. Ferry schedules and fares move with weekends, holidays and season — they are the weakest link here, so re-check them the week before you fly. The 穗深城际 fare is from a 2019 published table and should be treated as approximate.
